Evidence shows Boeremag regrouping, says officer
By Hanti OttoPretoria – Police have classified information that Right- wingers in the Boeremag have started to regroup following the arrest of five men alleged to have been responsible for the fatal bombing of a railway line in Soweto last year.
They also have the statements of about 300 witnesses regarding the Boeremag and its alleged plans to overthrow the government.
This was the evidence of Superintendent Tollie Vreugdenburg, one of the investigating officers in the case.
He testified during the bail application of Johan “Lets” Pretorius in the Pretoria regional court yesterday.
Dr Pretorius was arrested last October after a medical truck allegedly filled with weapons and ammunition was discovered in Lichtenburg.
“We do not have evidence under oath, but we do have classified information that the Boeremag has started to regroup,” Supt Vreugdenburg told the court.
He opposed bail, claiming Dr Pretorius could continue to organise Boeremag activities if released.
He said the truck carrying the arms belonged to a medical company, of which Dr Pretorius was a director.
The police suspect the weapons in this truck were part of “Popeye”, the code name for the alleged coup.
“Several fingerprints were found in the truck, but none have been linked to the accused yet. Inside we also found a bag with clothes, including underpants with semen on. We have linked that semen to Pretorius,” he said.Defence advocate Piet Pistorius said his client had no previous convictions. He said other accused in the same case were granted bail and that Dr Pretorius’s businesses, farming interests and medical practice had been hit financially as a result of his incarceration.
Supt Vreugdenburg said police found Document 12, the alleged plan of the coup, on another accused’s computer.
He admitted the contents had been changed several times and different names placed next to different “jobs” which were to be carried out by Boeremag members during the staging of the coup.
Supt Vreugdenburg said there was no evidence Dr Pretorius was involved in the formulation of the document, but that he was at a meeting where the document was discussed.
